There is something visceral in the presentation of Fear, and games it influenced such as Trepang2. It’s a beautiful mixture of the visuals, the audio feedback as you pull the trigger, the deadly respect that enemy flesh pays to your bullets, the slow-motion sparks flying frenetic action. Add a pinch of super soldier abilities and, forgive the hyperbole, you start to feel like a god. The flow takes over.

Trepang2 iterates on the supernatural elements with some very interesting scenarios. I got excited when fighting one-on-one with a scientific monstrosity of a Moth Man. Visions filled my minds eye, of battling other well known cryptids. This promise of my mind was never fulfilled although more supernatural enemies did follow, just not fitting into as clear cryptid roles (I’m admittedly not a cryptozoologist).

The combat simulator provides potential endless entertainment via waves of enemies in varied locations. The gameplay is king and the combat simulator allows that to continue well past the limited story. I personally don’t need much of a story in this case. The combat simulator is why I have still not deleted the game from my Steam Deck.

This is an FPS I will revisit often, just pure adrenaline-fueled fun.
