The Mummy movie with Tom Cruise failed in the box office, in part due to a hilarious mistake with the trailer. All audio was excluded from one section, an intense scene with Tom Cruise struggling to not get sucked out of the open hatch on a cargo airplane. All audio was excluded, except, the Tom Cruise vocal track just yelling incomprehensibly. It was unfortunate the movie failed because it was the beginning of a planned launch of the Universal Monsters… universe. I think they called it the Dark Universe or something like that. Russell Crow was Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde, Tom Cruise would have been the Mummy, spoiler alert. I love the Universal Monsters and anything large scale with them would have been enjoyable to consume.
At least they made a retro video game with the license. An underrated game to accompany an underrated movie. A “demaster” to accompany a Dark Universe demake. The game itself is a metroidvania with contra style influences, aka you have guns. This one hit home for me because I like the movie, I like metroidvanias, and I like hidden gems. Has good progression, enjoyable varied bosses and a decent sized map with plenty to explore outside the necessary portions for story. A good, well rounded experience filling a small portion of the void left behind by a dead franchise.
